The Hudson River ferry terminal on West 42nd Street in Manhattan was a good place to photograph the Third Ave. convertibles. The West Shore Ferry operation was very busy in its day. Here we see the 851 and 1058 with their sides removed in an attempt to keep the passengers cool during the steamy New York summers. The West Shore Ferry building can be seen behind the cars as can the Miller Highway. This West Side highway was ultimately tom down, before it had a chance to fall down. Historians will tell you that TARS 851 was the very first Brill convertible delivered to the railway. They are correct but this 851 is not that car. The original 851 was renumbered into the 600 series and after the new 600 series steel cars were built, it was renumbered 1142. Therefore, the car shown here is second number 851. (Eugene Van Dusen)
