The first 50 DL-109 locomotives were delivered in a Pullman green color scheme with Dulux gold striping. This became the standard for the DL-109 fleet as the other color schemes were eliminated and repainted. The beauty of the DL-109 was that during the day it could easily handle the New Haven's express passenger trains, while at night it could easily cope with the freight traffic. Freight traffic had mushroomed as the Second World War got underway and the DL-109 as a passenger unit proved itself in service with a top speed of 80 MPH. As dual-service locomotives, they were naturally supplied with steam boilers. Through the war, they were the mainstay of New Haven's mainline passenger power. (T.J. Donahue)
