Amtrak didn't quite know how to deal with the City of San Francisco, and SP 101 and 102 were nameless in the initial May 1, 1971, timetable. They were combined with the daily Denver Zephyr overnight between Chicago and Denver on the CB&Q and then handled tri-weekly between Denver, Cheyenne and Ogden on the UP. By 1972 the train had been named the San Francisco Zephyr. On June 14, 1971, eastbound No.102 was facing the afternoon sun sweeping around Stanford Curve in Cold Creek Canyon dropping down the 1.8% from Donner at Andover, west of Truckee. (Matt Herson)
