The northbound local, widely known as the Jitterbug, approaches the Altapass, NC, depot after climbing the Blue Ridge Loops. This run normally drew a K-4 class 2-8-2 in the steam to diesel transition, but Dante has been able to free up the 902 for local service on May 13, 1951. The standard water tank at Altapass was one of three supplied via gravity from a single creek via a pipe through Blue Ridge Tunnel. Behind the tank stretches the "Apple Track" where CC&O-owned fruit was once loaded in refrigerator cars for northern markets. (Robert F. Collins)
