Queens, like Brooklyn, is part of Long Island and is the largest of the boroughs – as large as Brooklyn and the Bronx combined. It is unique in that having been formed from a series of separate towns, Queens’ residents regard themselves as citizens of their neighborhoods rather than of the borough. My mailing address was always “Jackson Heights, N.Y.”, never “Queens”. Queens has hosted two great New York World’s Fairs in 1939/1940 and 1964/1965 (I had the pleasure of attending both) as well as the United Nations General Assembly (1946 – 1952) in Flushing Meadow Park. It is the home of La Guardia and JFK airports as well as the massive Sunnyside Yard complex and my former residence for almost 40 years with the nearby IRT Flushing line providing a 25 minute ride into the heart of “The City”.

Rushing east on a weekday morning through Union Hall St. station just east of Jamaica Station, is Alco C-420 211 and her train. 4/17/68

Photograph from Trackside around the Big Apple 1964-1973 with Al Roberts.
