After leaving Springfield whether northbound or eastbound, the IT trains to both East Peoria and and Decatur shared the same trackage for a short distance to Starne Tower, a junction point where the Peoria-bound cars turned left, as car 274 is doing here on August 20, 1950. Photographer Van Dusen was standing high atop a Route 66 overpass about 7:30 AM looking south towards Springfield, down the IC main line. Starne controlled movements on the Wabash Railroad also crossing in the foreground. The Wabash was bound for Kansas City (and N&W ownership), the IC to St. Louis, and the IT to oblivion, albeit via N&W takeover, enroute. (Eugene Van Dusen)
