In June, 1954, an ABBA set of FTs, with the 38A leading, powers a Kansas City Division time freight through Washington, IA. The Milwaukee Road acquired thirteen ABBA sets of FTs from Electro-Motive between November, 1941 and July, 1945. Numbers 35-47 assisted in handling the heavy onslaught of wartime traffic. Upon delivery during July, 1945, locomotives 35, 36, 38, and 39 were immediately assigned ABCD suffixes, enabling them to be operated in two-unit sets. During 1954, all of the Road's FTs were assigned to a 14 day pool operating between Milwaukee, Harlowton, Lewiston, Savanna, Ottumwa and Kansas City. "In the hole" for the 38A is H-12-44 1839, assigned to the Patrol working between Nahant and Ottumwa. The Extra's FM switcher entered service on November 8, 1951, dressed in orange, gray and maroon colors, but has recently adopted the Road's orange and black freight colors, first introduced during 1949. Maroon locomotive cab numbers first appeared during the summer of 195, on H-12-44, RSC-2 and EMD switchers, and again on some locomotives after adopting the orange and black colors. The Milwaukee's octagonal crossing tower housed an operator and controls for activating crossing signals. (Charles Franzen)
