The F7's delivered in 1950 were creatures of the steam era. They arrived in drawbar-linked A-B-B-A sets and had the optional "passenger" pilots with coupler covers. By the mid-1950s they all got couplers, but in July 1963, the 702A was still carrying its coupler covers. On Septemer 22, 1958, C&S F7s 700D/C were leading freight No. 77 when it hit head-on with Billings-Denver passenger train No. 30 at Bloomfield, Colo., 14 miles north of Denver. Two crew members were killed, and the two F7s were heavily damaged, along with CB&Q E7 9936B. The F-units were rebuilt by EMD as 1500-h.p. F9m's.
