A matched set of new F7s leads a westbound freight around the lower loop at Arena. Between Rocky and Clay sidings, the engineering staff of the D&SL resorted to two ten-degree curves to make the transition from the foothills to the Front Range escarpment at the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon. At the rear of the train a 4-8-2 helper had just cleared the west switch at Rocky Siding. Originally known as "Arena," Rocky siding was renamed when the spur to the new Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons plant was built in the late 1940s. (William J. McChesney)
