From Willey Brook Bridge, the railroad continued its 2.22 percent climb around the shoulder of Mount Willard and across the Great Fill to the Gateway, a long curved rock cut that formed an abrupt west end of the notch. According to Ben, it was “wicked cold”, below zero and with a strong north wind, January 12, 1964 as he captured the four units of RY-2 running light east through the gateway, returning to Willey Brook to lift the remainder of their 52-car train. They had doubled the head end to Fabyans, four miles west of the summit at Crawford Notch. Snow conditions on this particular day may have prompted the crew to double the extra distance to Fabyans. It was at this point in the Gateway where helpers attached behind the caboose might uncouple on the move and follow the train up to Crawford Notch station.
