The inclusion of the New Haven Railroad into the huge Penn Central occurred in January 1, 1969. The acceptance of the New Haven into Penn Central was imposed by the US DOT/ICC as a condition for approving the merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central. The entire New Haven was reduced to two Penn Central Divisions, New England-West and New England-East. The merger brought former PRR MP-54 class MU equipment to New Haven for occasional special trips. Seen here in 1972 a train comprised of MP-54 equipment makes a station stop at Bridgeport. These cars were never equipped for third rail operation and hence could not operate into Grand Central Terminal. (William Rosenberg)
